Envision the Future is the title of Chapter 5 of The Leadership Challenge. This chapter begins with a discussion of how being forward looking sets a leader apart from a credible person. Kouzes and Posner draw upon stories of Gail Mayville, an administrative assistant at Ben & Jerry’s, and Tara Church, one of the founding members of the Tree Musketeers when she was 8 years old.

You are then coached determine the “something” you want to do. This starts with thinking about your past. What common threads are there? What were the moments that changed your life?

This chapter recommends reading the biography of a visionary leader to get a better understanding of how to envision the future. My biography collection is limited to one book, The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin.

After this, the authors suggest you project yourself 10 years into the future and write an article on how you’ve made a difference. Using the details from this article you are prepared to write your vision statement. From this, you can produce a slogan and image to keep the idea in your head.

This sounds like an interesting set of exercises. I think I will try the article as part of my morning pages.
