Writing for public consumption has always been difficult for me. I’ve had moments in the past where I was able to write a paragraph or two every day, but those pages were written directly to my wife. I did it publicly as I wanted to be public, but I was really doing it so my wife would get a chance to see what was going on in my life while she was living in Japan.
Now, I struggle with deciding what I want my public image to be. Do I make critical comments about my current job here with my name attached to it? Do I just write what comes to my mind in a pointless wandering fashion?
I know that coming up with a focus for this website is important. One of the areas to be covered will be my artistic side. Currently I am practicing drawing. Learning or studying don’t seem to be the right words. You can study a technique, but you can’t study how to see the details of an object. Seeing detail and shape is something you practice. I also plan to talk about the books I read and want to read.
One of the books that keeps coming up in my life is the Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. Today this book has crossed my path again in the form of a post by Jaymi Elford on diyplanner.com. She talks about practicing writing everyday and the morning pages habit that is promoted by Julia in the Artist’s Way.
I try to maintain a journal not to improve my writing, but to give me an excuse to use the fountain pens and to practice my handwriting. I admit that I am far from writing 3 pages a day. Maybe it’s time to apply the journal to practicing my writing as well. I have added this book to my reading list.
